This was an interesting variation on a problem solving technique I developed over the years. A potential client asked me to how I would solve a problem he had. I told him that the first thing I ask myself when confronted with a problem for which I had a small knowledge base was: "Who do I know that's an expert in this field?" Two people/companies came to mind immediately for his problem. The other nugget I gave him was that sometimes fixing what you already have is more expensive than starting over and I suspected that, in his case, that might be true. He hired my firm on the basis of this answer. Profit on the project was about $50,000.
